Lifelong Learning (Thing 2)

After reviewing the 7 1/2 Habits online tutorial, I have separated what habits are easier and more difficult for myself.

Easier:

Accept Responsibility For Your Own Learning – I do this often in my life. If I want to know how to do something, I will either get a book on how to do it, or I will search for it online. If there is something that I am not sure about, I will look it up because I like to have the correct information.

Have Confidence in Yourself as a Competent, Effective Learner – As stated above, I often will take it upon myself to learn about something new. I do have confidence that I know where to go and learn about something even if it is something I may not know much about.

Create Your Own Toolbox – I am luck in the sense, that I know people who know a wide variety of subjects. If I know that a friend or acquaintance may know about something, I will ask them for their expertise in addition to looking up information about the subject myself.

Use Technology to your Advantage – I do this all the time. I am a gadget girl. I love to play with these new toys. I am lucky that my husband is a gadget boy, so he usually will get these wonderful toys and then I can play with them. Also, I think playing is the best way to learn. If there is a new widget or web 2.0 network that I just heard about, I’ll go to the site to check it out and play with it. Then, if I like it enough, I’ll sign up or use the widget on my own page.

Teach/Mentor Others – This really is a great tool. If you want to really know something, teach it. You will have to do a bunch of research in order to have knowledge to teach others. Also, the people you are teaching may have questions that you didn’t think of yourself and then you can learn more by trying to answer their question.

Play – As I have stated above, the best way to learn is play. I have never taken one computer class and I know more than the average user. How did I gain all of this knowledge? A vast majority of it I learned from playing around with the programs or web sites. For me, hands-on learning is really important, but it is also important to have a good time doing it. It doesn’t feel like work, but playtime.

Difficult:

Goals – This may be easy for some, but for some reason, setting goals is difficult for me. Sometimes it is difficult for me to sit down and really think about a goal. Often, it takes me a long time to accomplish a goal. I am a procrastinator by nature and will let things go. Its best if I do things in chunks.

View Problems as Challenges – I normally view problems as problems. I try to fix the problems I come against, but still view them as problems. I could try to change the way I look at things, but I have done this for so long I am not sure I could change. I will do my best though.

After watching that presentation, I discovered that many of these steps I do already for myself, and have little to no problem doing them. However, I know that some of them give me trouble and I will do my best to work on that.

  • A Graphic Novel By Any Other Name October 28, 2009
My colleagues, my editor, my friends, my students and (especially) their parents have all bemoaned on one occasion or another the term “graphic novel”.  Problem 1: They’re not always novels.  Problem 2 (mostly from parents of students): the word “graphic” suggests adult and/or extreme content.  Well, I’ve made my peace with the fact that the name refers to t […]

With Halloween just a day away, one cannot help but think of ghosts and spirits.  Washington D.C. has plenty of opportunity for frights, even when you don’t count the politicians!  When you come to ALA Annual next June, you just might see a spirit or two! D.C.’s most famous haunted house is, of course, the White House.  Abraham Lincoln has been seen in the E […]
